30 People On 2014: Chris Corbett & Daniela Riquelme

30 People on 2014_012

Little known and possibly completely made up fact: 30 is the age of some good, good cheese (if you’re into that sort of thing). And that’s science. That’s why each year Another-Day selects 30 people we really like, 30 people we feel have either really achieved something or 30 people who consistently do amazing work, and we ask them to review the previous year’s cultural output. Today, two of those people are Chris Corbett and Daniela Riquelme.

We ask each participant in 30 People On 2014 for four simple things. They tell us what movies we should’ve watched, what music we should’ve heard, the best thing about their 2014, and what they hope is to come in 2015. This is what they said…

Chris Corbett is the bassist in The Moths. He’s also shot, edited and directed the hell out of things in the local film industry.

Your Favorite Movie from 2014 (and why, if you dig):

You know, despite working in the damn film industry, I didn’t actually watch anything that made my brain ignite with dangerous levels of dopamine. However, I did get to read the first draft of Tarantino’s Hateful Eight (don’t tell him, you guys!) and it completely and utterly blew my mind. I really hope the Weinsteins get around to making the film and that Tarantino can get over the devastation of getting leaked and move the fuck on with life because the story is awesome.

Your Favorite Song from 2014 (we know this one’s hard so choose what comes to mind):

Pup’s Reservoir has like 150 plays on my iTunes library, and I’m pretty confident that I’m responsible for at least 30 000 of the 140 000 odd views the track has on YouTube. It’s just great, energetic, punk rock, from a brand new band that was the first single on their amazing debut album, and from a country that is producing my favorite bands on the planet – Canada, eh? Damn straight it’s Canada!

Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole):

Getting my directing chops on for a brand new travel show called South Streets was just the best. The show aired on eTV’s eKasi plus platform under some incredibly tight turnaround times (we HAD to shoot an episode a day) and with bugger all budget. The shoot saw myself, my amazing presenter Zola Hashatsi and five others in our micro crew travel to every part of the country (except the Northern Cape – soz for you, NC, we’re delightful) to showcase the cheapest and raddest backpackers, dining establishments and cultural and adventure activities all the way from Bela Bela to Hout Bay. If you ever want your faith in people justified/restored/created, just get the hell off your couch and go on an adventure. You will meet the best human beings in existence and they are right in our backyard. You can also do it kaaaaaaak cheap, trust me. The 18 hour days and 27 000 kms traveled nearly killed me, but I’d do it all again.

The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015):

I am ridiculously excited to see what the response to aYeYe is going to be like. We’ve been working on it since November and it’s a return to great locally produced narrative drama amid a sea of Big Bang Theory and “Desperate Housewives of Johannesburg” bullshit that floods television screens these days. It’s all about ad agency life and you can catch it on Mondays on Vuzu Amp at 21:00.
We had such a good year playing music around the country that there are now some massive plans in the works for The Moths… that I won’t mention just yet. Seeing those realised will make my 2015. Shout out to everyone that played with us last year. Can’t wait to do it again in this year!
Cowabunga!

Daniela is a fashion intern at Marie Claire and part of DJ duo Swan Ronson.

Your Favorite Movie from 2014 (and why, if you dig):

I’m probably one of the most indecisive people in the entire world, but after a ten-minute deliberation, I’m going to confidently pick Interstellar. Granted I probably don’t understand it 100% (then again, who really did?) I loved how it kept me captivated the entire 2.5hrs. Anne Hathaway wasn’t even that annoying. PLUS I got to ogle over Matthew McConaughey. #SAwooooooooon

Your Favorite Song from 2014 (we know this one’s hard so choose what comes to mind):

Ahhhhh goodness… I cant’ simply pick one [Editor’s Note: It’s cool. I did] and I don’t even know if they’re all from 2014 , soz
Tove Lo – Habits (Stay High)
Foals – My Number
Bear Hands – Giants
Born Ruffians – Needle
The Zolas – Knot In My Heart
Alvvays- Archie Marry Me

Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole):

After not going to a proper music festival since Oppi in 2009, and being a Willy Mason fan since 2011, I’m gonna have to say it was watching good ol’ Willy at Oppi last year with my favorite person in the whole world (It’s really not that gay, guys!). It was such an intimate show and his voice really is phenomenal.

The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015):

Neela “Bam Bam” and myself recently started a DJ Duo called Swan Ronson (because, you know, there aren’t enough DJs in the world :)) Anyways, I’d like to see that succeed because we really do just love dancing and playing our favorite songs (we’d probably be doing this in her living room but we think it’s time we shared it with everyone else). I’ve also been interning at Marie Claire for a while, so i guess I’m just excited to be a part of something permanently. OH YESSSSSSSSSSS AND OF COURSE THE NEW SEASON OF GIRLS AND COMPLETING PARKS AND REC.
