As South Africans it’s easy to take our shared culture for granted. Mostly because our “shared culture” sometimes amounts to ‘stuff Afrikaans people like’, highlighting the cultural while isolating it from the shared with a big ol’ Grand Canyon of doubt, criticism, bigotry and shame. Kind of like eating Peck’s Anchovette Fish Paste. Yugh. Buzzfeed compiled this amazing clip in which Americans are tortured into eating Peck’s, Ouma Rusks, biltong, droewors and koeksisters. The results are pretty hilarious.
I’ve tried everything these poor Americans are eating or drinking at some point and, let me tell you, I’m with the guy who feels like every South African snack is something you’d only eat when you’re blind drunk. Except Rusks. Rusks are super tasty if you have them with a hot drink. Someone get these poor bastards some Rooibos to go with their South African snacks.
