Die Antwoord Train A Robot In Chappie Trailer

I don’t know if I can get away with calling a Neil Blomkamp movie “highly anticipated” after he made Elysium, but I have to be fair, Chappie seemed like a return to the successes of District 9. This movie puts Sharlto Copley in the titular role as a security robot that’s been reprogrammed by Dev Patel and Die Antwoord (no joke). While I’d expected an action-heavy Robocop-style trailer featuring Chappie tearing through a mulleted, Australian-again Hugh Jackman, the Chappie trailer we got here is something altogether different.

Instead of explosions and robot gunfights, it appears Chappie will spend at least some time on watching our robot pal learn to read and paint, and getting inspiration about life from his buddies in Die Antwoord. It’s surreal to see the characters of Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er coaxing a child-like robot but, I guess even they have their softer side? Seems they’re gonna train the kid to be a gangster at some point or else there’s very little tension.
