NSFW: Love & Hate Don’t Need Translation In ‘The Tribe’

The Tribe, directed by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy, is a movie unlike anything you’ve experienced before and that’s because it’s set in a world with a deaf and mute population. No subtitles or music are used, stripping things down a lot compared to what we expect from films, but doing it without having an exaggerated, weird “art haus” feel to it.

The Tribe will feel all sorts of uncomfortable for the average audience and that’s the powerful impact this movie could hold. Audiences are so used to being bombarded with amazing visuals accompanied by lively soundtracks in blockbuster movies that our attention spans have become very limited. As soon as there are drawn out moments of complete silence, the movie is written off as boring and awkward and some douchébag in the room decides to make some remark. I can imagine myself becoming frustrated with moments in The Tribe, but it’s a refreshing approach to what we think makes a movie and I’m very willing to give it a try.
